If you’re a mom working from home – do you have a designated place to work? If so, is it a place that makes you feel productive and creative?
Working from home is a funny, funny thing. For me, if I didn’t have a designated place to work – I’m not sure I ever would. It’s hard enough to switch gears from dirty diapers, sippy cups and Elmo to writing a coherent, professional sounding email. It’s a daily struggle. But, I’m embracing it and counting my blessings along the way.
When we bought our house a little over a year ago, I knew I was going to be giving up my downtown studio/office and bringing everything home. I was so excited to be a homeowner – YAY! But, I was a little reluctant to give-up my office. It was a place that was just for me, a sanctuary of sorts. I could go there and not feel like I needed to vacuum or peek in the fridge every 10 minutes. I went there to work. That was all. Simple.
Luckily our new house had an additional master bedroom/bath added on – so the original master was the perfect room to design an office/playroom. It was going to be the perfect balance of work (for me) and play (for my daughter). My life didn’t really revolve around “just me” anymore, so the office space needed to incorporate and tend to the most important part of my life – Piper (and now Paxton too). But, it did need to have some separation of work and play.
I really do believe that your surroundings are a reflection of who you are…and also the work that you produce. So, I wanted something simple, clean, soothing, but most of all – beautiful! I wanted it to be a place that both my daughter and I would want to go.
If you’re a mom working from home and you want to be more productive or just feel better about yourself and the work you’re doing – invest in a space that is just FOR YOU (at least partly)! You are worth it. You will run a better business and be a better mother because of it.
OK, so let’s be real – my desk is not always (or ever) as clean as these pictures portray and that little gate – yeah, that doesn’t really ever get shut – but I thought it was a great idea!
My very creative mother that has an amazing eye for design came up with the design and layout for the room. I love working here. And playing here. It’s a room that our entire family loves.
So this piece right here is really what makes this room work. It’s a divider and also a place to store toys (which are coming out of our ears!). This is one of my absolute favorite pieces of furniture that we own.
